When we pray for Gods kingdom to come and his will be done on earth as it is in heaven,
what are are actually saying?
In order to answer this question we must know what heaven is like and luckily for us
many in the family of faith as well as in scripture who were filled with the Spirit, have had
a glimpse of what heaven is like through dreams and visions. The most well known vision
in the bible is Isaiah’s vision of Lord found in Isaiah 6. In Isaiah’s vision, we read that God
is exalted and glorified where he sits, however he is not alone; surrounding him are
winged creatures named Seraphims who use their wings to hide themselves from the
fullness of God's glory. Even though they are fully covered, they are still overwhelmed
with the presence of God in their midst that all they could sing is “Holy Holy, Holy is the
LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory”. John was also given a vision of
heaven and in it, he saw the Lord sitting in a majestic throne that had rainbow, thunder
and lightning coming from it. Again, God was not alone in heaven. He was surrounded by
many creatures and 24 elders, all of whom were enamoured by his present that they sang
“Holy Holy...You are worthy to receive glory, honour and power...” day and night.
Brothers and sisters, it is God’s will that he is glorified; that the praises from heaven will
echo throughout the earth from the mouth of every living being. When we pray for his
kingdom to come we recognise that there will be a greater joy when his throne room
resides here on earth (Revelation 21:4) and like the creatures who reign with him in
heaven, we also pray for a time we can reign with him. When we ask for God’s will, we
ask him to use us to glorify his name, to accomplish his good work that return the praises
to him. An example of this in my life is that if I pray for God’s will in my career, I am
essentially praying for God to use my work to bring glory to himself in whatever way he
sees fit.
When we pray for God’s kingdom to come we are praying for something that has been
promised through the prophets. Before the first coming, the prophet Ezekiel, received a
word from the Lord about the future restoration of His people. In Ezekiel 37, God
promised the he would bring people back from grave. By this he meant he would give
humanity a new heart; a heart to love him and worship him and this new humanity will be
united under one king - Jesus. As believers, we earnestly await the second coming of
Jesus when he will unite us as one nation (Revelation 7:9). In this new nation there will be
righteous, peace and love.
Therefore, it is God’s ultimate will that he dwells with mankind and that he is exalted in
every heart. Hence, when we pray for God’s will in our family, our jobs and our
community we are ultimately praying for his name to glorified for all to see and put their
trust him so that we can all reign with Jesus when His kingdom is established here on
earth.
